On the 21st of May at District, Writing On The Wall, Next Stop New York & Afrofutures UK present a compelling afternoon of creativity, conversation and art inspired by the work of Afrofuturist artists. The event will be a day of conversation, art and creativity, navigating through stories of the past to create visions of the future.
Following the event, founding member and principle songwriter of The Specials, Jerry Dammers will take over the official after-party – DJ’ing from his extensive repertoire of ska-punk-dub fusion through to the wilder edges of jazz, avant-garde and Sun Ra inspired Afrofuture tunes.
After establishing 2 Tone Records, a company dedicated to the revival of the 1970’s and 1980’s ska music scene, Dammers went on to become an anti-apartheid campaigner, developing Artists Against Apartheid in the US. He is also the man behind the song Free Nelson Mandela, written in 1984. After re-emerging in the millennium with a wealth of DJ experience under his belt, Dammers created The Spatial AKA Orchestra, who he regularly performs with.
Jerry Dammers appears as part of the month-long Writing on the Wall festival – WoWfest 2016. Check out the full listings at Festival.writingonthewall.org.uk
