WHATS ON: The Beat | The Live Rooms | 26.02.16

The BeatThe Beat are one of the biggest bands of the 2-Tone movement and known the world over for their ska fusion rhythms and a string of hit singles. They are now bringing back their unique sound to an exclusive set of gigs at select venues, including The Live Rooms in Chester on Friday 26th February 2016. Formed in Birmingham in 1978, The Beat were part of the West Midlands ska revival scene which also produced The Specials and The Selecter, whilst London saw the formation of Madness and The Bodysnatchers.

Their first single was an arresting version of Smokey Robinson’s ‘Tears Of A Clown’, given a completely new feel and backed with their own composition ‘Ranking Full Stop’. Released in a one-off deal on Jerry Dammers’ Chrysalis-backed 2-Tone label, the single stormed into the Top 10 in December 1979, and saw the band appear twice on Top Of The Pops.

Backed by Arista, the band then formed their own label called Go-Feet Records, when they released another Top 10 hit ‘Hands Off… She’s Mine’. This was the first of a host of hit singles for the group, which included ‘Mirror in the Bathroom’, ‘Too Nice To Talk To’, ‘Can’t Get Used To Losing You’, and ‘All Out To Get You’.

With the band’s 2016 line-up featuring Ranking Roger and Ranking Junior on vocals, Oscar Harrison on drums, and Andy Pearson and Steve Harper on guitars, The Beat continue to ignite crowds with their blend of ska, pop, reggae and punk rock, particularly during their dynamic live performances. Their show in Chester is certainly one you won’t want to miss.
