WHATS ON: Henry IV Part 1 and 2 | Arts Club | 16 – 19 December 2015

Henry IV Part 1 and 2PurpleCoat are a Liverpool based production company who continue to produce exciting and diverse theatre work with their adult and youth cast, staging productions in the city and touring them across the UK. After working tirelessly for seven years, PurpleCoat have now been awarded funding from the ArtsCouncil in order to continue their work, and to celebrate they are staging a double bill of Henry IV Part 1 and 2 at the Arts Club from Wednesday 16th until Saturday 19th December 2015. With their five star success of Hamlet in Ireland in April, a sell-out run of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Bombed Out Church’s Raise The Roof Festival, and now their successful funding bid, 2015 has already been a great year for PurpleCoat. And they will be rounding off their landmark year with a production of Henry IV Part 1 and 2 – Shakespeare’s epic story about the dividing of Britain and the victory of the Battle of Agincourt.

PurpleCoat always pride themselves on looking at their source material from a fresh angle, and their version of two of the Bard’s greatest tales will be no different. “In our production, we have altered two of the play’s most iconic characters, Falstaff and Prince Hall, into women,” says Artistic Director, Karl Falconer. “We did the same thing with Hamlet, which really helped to redefine and make fresh such a well-known play. It’s another way in which we can make Shakespeare’s stories speak to everyone, today.”

With the double bill being performed across two nights, Karl says it is an experience not to be missed. “This is Shakespeare’s Game of Thrones. The opportunity to return to a story for a second night and see its sequel: it’s the original HBO box set. It’s nothing like we’ve ever done before – it’s exciting.”

Exploring issues of immigration, nationalism, and independence, Henry IV Part 1 and 2 are still incredibly of our time. And with PurpleCoat’s version looking at the role of women too, the Bard’s tales have never been more relevant. Tickets for Part 1 and 2 are on sale now from artsclubliverpool.com. Adults: £11.50, Conc: £9.50, or book tickets for both parts for just £16.
