COMING UP: It’s happen-Ping! in Liverpool, from 29 June 2012

From 29 June, as part of Ping! Liverpool – 40 tables will spring up across the city in locations ranging from John Lennon Airport and the Albert Dock right through to fire stations and shopping centres. The event is aims to encourage people to get active and into the Olympic spirit.

The tables will be in place for four weeks (until 26 July) for all to enjoy for free, making sure people are in the sporting spirit in the run up to the Olympics. The programme of events includes master-classes, competitions and free activities.

Liverpool has been selected as one of nine cities to play host to a number of ping pong tables with the aim of giving as many people as possible the opportunity to a play a relaxed, or competitive, game which is completely free of charge.

The initiative is backed by National Lottery funding from Sport England, and has been organised by Liverpool City Council

Cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “Table tennis is a great way for people to get active and have fun at the same time. I’m sure we’ll see a wide range of people picking up a bat and taking the Ping! challenge – whether it’s in a friendly game to perfect a topspin, or a more competitive rally. It’s a coup for Liverpool to be chosen as just one of a handful of cities to play host to this initiative, and I’m sure this city’s reputation for being sporting-mad will result in this being a very popular activity throughout July.”
