COMING UP: The Last 5 Years at The Actor’s Studio, 24 July – 3 Aug 2012

Broadway award-winning musical, The Last 5 Years is coming to Liverpool’s Actor’s Studio on 24 July till 3 Aug. It’s two actors, a pianist, a 5-year love story, a comedy, a drama, and a Liverpool premiere!

The Last 5 Years is written by Tony award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown and starring Liverpool’s Helen Carter and Stephen Fletcher. The limited run of the critically-acclaimed play will be Liverpool’s premiere. It premiered in Chicago in 2001, and then on Broadway in 2002, winning a number of awards and nominations in the US, before playing to audiences in over 20 countries.

The Last 5 Years is a multi award-winning, heartbreaking and hilarious one-act musical about a New York couple who fall in and out of love over the course of five years together. Cathy is a vivacious and struggling actress, Jamie a hotshot up-and-coming novelist. In a clever way of storytelling Cathy’s story begins at the end of their relationship, and Jamie’s starts at the beginning. Watch their relationship shift from tragic end to hopeful beginning and hopeful beginning to tragic end, as Jamie and Cathy share their separate tales of life and love over their last five years.

Stephen Fletcher (A Life In The Theatre, Eric’s, A Street-car Named Desire, Hamlet, Lennon) said: “The Last 5 years is a piece Helen and I have always wanted to do and we’re putting a peg in the ground and doing it ourselves. I absolutely love this musical. It’s got everything in it you could want; it’s funny, beautiful, and the music is so moving.”

Helen Carter (The Gatekeeper, Flint Street Nativity, No Wise Men, Dead Heavy Fantastic) said: “Stephen called me up and asked me if I’d like to do the show with him. I jumped at the chance. To take it to The Actor’s Studio Theatre is brilliant. It’s a really intimate space and it works so well being so close to the stage- particularly with this piece. The audience is very much a part of the play.”
