Mersey Pirates Muster take over New Brighton this weekend

This weekend the Mersey Pirate Muster crew will take over New Brighton in a swashbuckling spectacular on Sunday 7th August 2011. The FREE feast of maritime fun for pirates of all ages begins at 11am and closes with a spectacular staged battle at 5pm

A crowd of over 40,000 are expected to attend this year’s event, which takes place in and around Fort Perch Rock. The muster starts with a pirates parade, where children can sign up to the Mersey Pirate Navy for a probationary 100 years. This is followed with themed sailing displays, a treasure hunt and living history demonstrations. The Black Rock mermaid will also make an appearance played by local actress Suzanne Collins.

The event climaxes with a staged pirate battle – this year the storming of the fort – including cannon fire, muskets, swords and approximately one hundred pirates and Redcoats. There will also be a chance to learn how to talk, dress and fight as a pirate, and meet some of the seafarers before the storming of the Fort.

The end of the battle will be signalled by the Pirate Muster Flag being raised on the Fort Perch Rock and the event finale will be marked with a pyrotechnic effects display on New Brighton Beach – a spectacular display the like of which has never been seen before!

Mersey Ferries will be running a special Children’s Cruise between 12.15pm and 3.00pm, sailing out to Fort Perch Rock (Brazil Buoy) to provide a grand stand view as the mock Pirate battle rages at Fort Perch Rock. The local legendary pirate Captain Fortunatus Wright, played by Brookside actor Dean Sullivan, is calling on all budding pirates to join him on his Mersey Ferry voyage.

River Explorer cruises will sail as usual between 10am – 6pm and for those brave pirates who want to get closer to the action in New Brighton, there’s a dedicated FREE heritage bus service running regularly between 10.30am and 5.00pm between Seacombe and New Brighton. As part of the Pirate Muster, Spaceport will also be hosting special appearances from performers and musicians.

The children’s cruise will call at all three terminals; tickets cost £6 for children and £8 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at www.merseyferries.co.uk or calling 0151 330 1444 or at any Mersey Ferry terminal (advance booking recommended).
