NEWS: Call to get involved in ‘Wheelchair in a Day’ launch event

Liverpool’s Wheelchair Service
is hosting a community fun day to celebrate the launch its new ‘Children’s Wheelchair in a Day’ Scheme – and is appealing to other local organisations to get involved. The fun day will be taking place at the Lifehouse Centre on Brunswick Dock from 10am – 2pm on Friday 5 July, and will be attended children with disabilities from across the city of Liverpool, their teachers and parents.

Under the new scheme, many young wheelchair users across the city will now be able to be assessed and provided with a wheelchair to fit their needs – all on the same day.

The event, which is being hosted by Liverpool Community Health, will offer young wheelchair users the opportunity to take part in a wide range of wheelchair-based sports, games and activities.

It will also include a ‘market stall’ area where young wheelchair users can find out more about many of the different organisations, support services, recreational activities, sports teams and special interest groups available to them in their area.

Christine McGhee, Service Manager for Liverpool Wheelchair Service which is run by Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust explains, “The launch of our new Children’s ‘Wheelchair in a Day’ scheme is a fantastic new initiative which will totally transform the way wheelchairs are provided to children and their families and this event is all about celebrating this exciting new development with our service users.

“It’s also an opportunity to signposting them to other services across the city, and inspire them about the wide range of opportunities which are open to them.

“And we want to encourage other groups across the city who may be interested in taking part in the event, to get in touch with us as there are lots of opportunities for doing so.”

The Liverpool Wheelchair Service is delivered by Liverpool Community Health, and is based at Lifehouse Centre on Summers Road at Brunswick Business Park.
