NEWS: Minton tiles on display at St George’s Hall, 2-15 Aug 2012

The magnificent Minton Tiles will be on display at St George’s Hall this summer (starting Thurs 2 Aug). To celebrate this children across Liverpool have been encouraged to create their own Minton Tile, the winning design will feature on special chocolate tile which will be on display until the final day (Wed 15 Aug).

The tiles will be judged and the winner will be given a special chocolate tile featuring their own design, created and sponsored by Chocorella. The floor will be uncovered for two weeks only, on 2 til 15 August to reveal its magnificent tiles.

Cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon said: “Every time the tiles on the Great Hall are revealed is special and never fails to attract a huge response from visitors. This amazing display of craftsmanship is not to be missed. I would urge anyone who hasn’t yet seen the Minton Tiles to visit St George’s Hall and take the opportunity to see not just the Tiles but also the prestigious concert room. With more tours and activities on offer this summer there really is something for everyone, even if you have been before it’s a day out not to be missed.”

This year the Minton Tiles aren’t the only attraction, for the first time ever visitors will also be able to take a limited edition behind the scenes tour of the Hall, wander through its many corridors and read about it afterwards in a special guide book.

The tiles were displayed earlier this year when over 6000 members of the public flocked to St Georges Hall to see for themselves these Victorian masterpieces.The floor consists of 30,000 hand crafted tiles, many depicting the world famous Liver Bird along with Neptune, sea nymphs, dolphins and tridents.

The tiles can be viewed daily from 10am – 5pm with the last admission at 4.30pm every day. There is a small admission charge of £2 for adults, (which includes entry to see the floor and Concert room), under 16s are free

Visitors can also listen to the spectacular knowledge of Steve Binns MBE, local historian who will be talking in depth about the Minton Tiles and the building itself. £3.50 per person. Daily at 11am, and 2pm (apart from 3rd and 7th when there is no 11am tour).
