Phil hosts a celebration of Movie Musicals with the John Wilson Orchestra

On Sat 3rd December John Wilson and The John Wilson Orchestra will be joined by special guest singers Annalene Beechey, Kim Criswell and Matthew Ford as they take the audience on a journey from the dawn of the talkies to the golden age of the movie musical.

John Wilson, a world renowned conductor, arranger and film music expert, was given permission to reconstruct the scores to the classic MGM film musicals. In 1969, MGM made the decision to destroy the scores to their legendary film musical catalogue, which includes High Society, The Wizard of Oz and Meet Me in St. Louis.

All that remained were the piano reductions, or “short scores”, which had been lodged for copyright purposes in the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Using these scores as the base, John undertook the herculean task of transcribing the original orchestrations by ear from the soundtrack recordings.

The resulting album, ‘That’s Entertainment: A Celebration of the the MGM Film Musical’ was released to fantastic reviews and charted at No.17 in the UK National Album Charts!

In 2007 Wilson gave the first European performances of the newly restored score of Wizard of Oz with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, synchronised with the film.
