PHOTO REVIEW: Africa Oye – Day One @ Sefton Park 18/06/11

Liverpool’s annual celebration of African music and culture Africa Oye kicked off today in Sefton Park. Liverpool Live were there to take in the smells, sights and sounds of the 2011 festival.

The free festival now in it’s 20th year, featured an array of bands taking to the main stage, with most acts lasting just over an hour. Highlights included The Gangbe Brass Band from Benin, Kayrece Fotso, Mariem Hassan, Bonga and Fatoumata Diawara before the Reggae Matriarch herself Marcia Griffiths took to the stage to close out the first day

As well as music from all around the world there were stalls selling African food, clothes and jewellery. The family atmosphere was boosted with entertainment, such as other music tents, dancers as well as bouncy castles and face paints to keep the kids entertained.

As with all outdoor events the weather is key to a sucessful event and the rain stayed away, allowing the sun to raise temperatures in the afternoon and started to cool down towards the end of the event.

Was a great first day, get down to the after party tonight at the Picket and come back to the park tomorrow and do it all again.
