REVIEW: Ladies Day, The Royal Court, 19 June 2013

Amanda Wittington’s
new comedy Ladies Day is currently playing at the Royal Court till 13th July. The play has already received many rave reviews in its opening week, so we went our reviewer Rachel Donohoe along to see if it’s a winner…

The Royal Court Theatre has been at the core of Liverpool culture for almost two centuries. Since 2005 the theatre has had a makeover in keeping with the decadent era style. The stalls have been converted into more modern cabaret seating with tables for drinks making it more comfortable with more space and easy access for waiting on staff.

I was delighted to be reviewing this play after hearing much praise about it from friends and even more delighted to be asked to come along for dinner before the show at the Royal Court. Unfortunately I had to work late so couldn’t make the dinner but we were treated to interval ‘pudding’, I opted for a cheeseboard washed down with red wine which was delicious.

The play was excellent and had us giggling from start to finish. It is based around a group of workmates Shelly, Jan, Linda and Pearl who do the daily grind in a fish factory and decide to get glammed up for Ladies Day in Aintree Racecourse. The comedy from Amanda Whittington was originally set in Royal Ascot but the play has taken a twist upon coming to Liverpool which has worked really well.

Roxanne Pallet as Shelley was my favourite character she was really genuinely funny and nice to see the contrast to her character Jo on Emmerdale. A lot also has to be said for Jack Lord who switched between characters seamlessly from foreman to jockey to TV presenter.

The interaction between characters feels spot on from the witty banter on the factory floor to more deeper, heartfelt relationships as the play goes on.

With lots a twists, laughs and songs it was a great play and thoroughly entertaining for a variety of ages.

Ladies Day runs from Friday 14 June to Saturday 13 July 2013 and if you go Friday or Saturday the best dressed audience member wins a bottle of bubbly so dress to impress girls!
